Maintaining a top 5 league position
|
For as long as Fabs stays on form and injury free, looking at our next 4 fixtures, becoming set piece dangerous, Benrahma still too impress and the return of Antonio, things are looking good. Winning when on backfoot is a rarity in the past but becoming common. If individual players keep improving as they are and the team spirit is obviously good, I feel confident we will be competing in and around the top 5 for a while and turn out good underdogs and underestimated by the usual teams that walked over us in the past.

Listening to the commentary of the Leeds game, something struck me. The commentators were talking about the theory that Bielsa teams start the season with a high energy game, but lose steam as the season goes on.
At the time I wondered if the same could apply to us this season. High energy, low rotation, small squad.

Darby, I agree with that, Bamford looked absolutely fucked when he was subbed

Keeping Rice and Soucek on form and injury free could be pretty crucial too. And Cresswell - never thought I would say that!

Sadly the only way I can see it happening is to print it out now and stick it on the wall.
Squad depth is just not there.

Factor in the games in hand clubs have over us then it is a bit of a false position.
All the challenges we have regarding tiredness will affect all the clubs. At the moment we're chilling better with it, but at some point we're going to have to use a bit more squad rotation.

To be fair this fifth position is illusory because three teams below us have a game in hand and another has two.
Better to ask if we can stay in the top eight.

The squad is very thin even if we throw the cup we could run out of steam by the end of Jan but they won't strengthen in the window, I would assume the board are thinking about 5 more wins and couple of draws and the golden goose will be secure for another season.

True, but it's so tight from places 3 to 10 (4 points), that presumably some teams in that band, have to play each other and can't both win and with such a narrow points spread, if we win one week and other teams lose, that would eradicate the game in hand advantage.
Of course being West ham, it rarely goes according to the script.

Won't even need that many points.
The relegation spread points on offer currently for 18th place is 30 - 31.5.
If we managed another 6 points in December and another 6, first two weeks of January, there'll be no transfer money spent in January. No sure there was going to be anyway.
I think a lot of us, would like to see a decent striker purchased. We've only ever had two strikers in the history of the Premier League, to get 15 goals or more, in a season

If Moyes got This squad top half then he’d have done an outstanding job let alone top 6, top 6 then he’d need a statue. This squad is paper thin and let’s have it right severely lacking in quality in a good few areas. I think we’ll finish between 8th-12th.

It's fucking outstanding how we are 5th with such shite forward line
If these cunts in charge had ANYTHING about them, they would give Moyes the money he needs to get him this team needs

There were players linked in the summer ... 2 or 3 top class young centre halves like the young bloke who has gone to Leicester , a centre forward like Watkins who I thought watching at Brentford could replace Haller & some left backs. But we ended up being net sellers in the summer ... Diangana out , small fee for Coufal , loan fee for Benrahma and Dawson
If we had had new owners and ambition we COULD be challenging the top 6 generally given the overall mediocrity. At the moment I am delighted with the job Moyes is doing with what he has and the spirit he seems to have got going. But I am just looking for us to get to 40 points and get closer to new owners. And having a genuine go at the FA Cup

The reason why being 5th is such a big deal (despite the games in hand others have) is the run we had.
We played all the best sides in the country early doors and managed to survive. We had a similar run when MP first joined and we didnt pick up points for ages.
Even when Payet was here I never thought we'd easily win a game. Now I dont think there is a team in the country that would spank us. We not only give the top teams a battle, we win most of them.
Thats a huge difference with West Ham. And arguably we've done alot of this without our most influential player (Antonio).
Injuries happen yes, but I often find injuries happen when the team is low on confidence and are on losing runs. Now mentally everyone in the squad wants to be in that first 11. I expect thats why Antonio wanted to start the other day. Players want to be part of the success.
I think if Antonio comes back well, we could make a top 8 finish even with Haller. Haller will get better but not 45m better.
But if the owners were to get a very serious striker in, maybe on loan. Not someone learning their trade but one who knows what to do. I think we could get Europe.
I'd be looking for a loanee striker and another central midfielder to deputise for Soucek/Rice (we'd really struggle if one of those were injured).
I'm not sure we need a lot more really. We have cover for the fullbacks/wingbacks (fredricks/johnson). Diop and Dawson as well for CB.
Other than that I'd pick up whatever the better championship players are in build for the future (i.e. not rely on them for this season).

Of our "peers" we still haven't played Chelsea, Southampton and Everton yet. Lets not get carried away.
We will probably stumble against those cunts Palace.

I'd be happy with 8th personally but as i said before on here, there can be no justifiable reason why we dont have a serious stab at the FA cup. Still need a bit more potencey up front to maintain our current progress and as with every team, hope the injuries are at a minimum.
